Because I use this blog as a journal and history, I decided this year I would put some dates of history and importance. Two years ago today Grandma Carter passed away. She was 93 almost 94. I don't know why I think about people more after they die, than when they are here. But I have been doing a lot of thinking about Grandma. My first memory is taking a bath in a big steel bath bin in the middle of her kitchen when I was a little girl. When she lived in Burley she always had a quilt on the frames and another one being pieced by her sewing machine. I used to work at House of Fabric and she would come and buy yards of fabric for the backs of her quilts. They are beautiful. And I always knew she sketched but I never paid much attention to them until after she died. I love just to sit and look at them and wonder what she thought about each sketch as she spend so much time on each with her pen.

I asked Grandma for another quilt a couple of years ago. This is the one she gave me. So beautiful. I will admit I have totally worn out the others. Now that I make quilts I feel bad using hers the way I did. So I have this one put away. What is worse, putting it away in a closet or wearing out a beautiful quilt that so much time and labor was put into it?

This one reminds me of Hawaii. She loved Hawaii and Vern her second husband.

This sketch reminds me of Rae Anne. The fifth grade school teacher who cares for all students.

This one reminds me of a Sound of Music moment. Don't we all wish wish we could have a moment like this with our children.

This is Nate's favorite. He has it hanging in his room.

Have you seen Marley and Me or read the book?

Grandma I love you. Thanks for your legacy you left all of us.
I can't believe it has been 2 years. It is a great tribute to a great lady.
ReplyDeleteSo enjoyed your tribute to Grandma. I miss her so much too. She was an elect lady.
ReplyDeleteYeah Grandma! I've decided to keep using Grandma's quilts. Hopefully now that we are older (kids) they won't be washed so much.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sherry! I have loved using the cd you gave me with Grandma's pictures on it, they are a treasure!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tribute to Mother. We all miss her. I can't help but think of her a lot. Believe it or not the song on my I-Pod right now is Irene Goodnight. Can't help but think of her when I hear that song.
